BRIEF HISTORY OF SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

VISION

Their vision was to invoke international standards in teaching, research, scholarship and professional education both in established professional areas that cross established professional and disciplinary boundaries.

Their ultimate aim was to train health care providers and specialists who would know where to serve, whom to serve and how to serve.

HISTORY

1961-1967
Dr. R. P. Baffour, VC KNUST proposed the idea with the University Hospital being the nucleus.
The new hospital was never built but the idea of SMS lingered.
Discussions concerning the importance of the Medical school still re-echoed on in all corridors.

1971-1972
Consultation between various institutions, prominent among them Stanford and the Commonwealth Foundation.

1974- Tamale Declaration
The Head of State and chairman of the National Redemption Council, Colonel Ignatius Kutu Acheampong declared in February that there was a need for a second medical school which was to be based in KNUST with Komfo Anokye as the Teaching Hospital.
It therefore became the task of the University not only to investigate the possibilities but to justify the need for a 2nd Medical School in Ghana.
The VC then Prof. E. Bamfo Kwakye appointed a 5 member committee under the chairmanship Prof. Emiretus F. A. Kuffuor.

The committee came up with the following findings to fortify the arguments in favour of the establishment of SMS.
•?Even if UGMS doubles its target output of 50 physicians a year to 100, the Doctor/Patient ratio in Ghana in the year AD 2000 would only be 1:5200.
•?Consideration of such social changes as increasing industrialization and the need for diversification of the Health Services.

1975 –Birth Year
In October 1975 the course in Human Biology began with the first batch of 21 students.
In 1982 the first batch of Doctors were produced. Since then the Medical School has produced over 700 medical Doctors.

•?BSc Nursing – 2003
•?BSc Sports and Exercise Science- 2004
•?Dentistry - 2006
With the inception of the collegiate system we find ourselves in different faculties:
Nursing and SES – Faculty of Allied Health Sciences
HB and Dentistry – School of Medical Sciences.
