MSA Dinner 2010: Most Creative attire(male)

Print PDF

This is an exclusive interview with Charles Nii Martey Martey of HBIII, winner of ‘Most Creative Attire (male)’ Award…an absolute must read!

WC: so, you won the award for most creative male. How did you feel?

Charles: I was really honoured and actually still am because just when I think everyone has forgotten about it, someone goes through their pictures and compliments me all over again.

WC: I understand this is your first MSA dinner ever…

Charles: yeah…and that made it even more…I dunno, ummm…i’d say special

WC: and your date? How happy was she that she was your date and no one else’s?

Charles: she was really happy, though she couldn’t make it for the dinner. Am almost certain if she had come, she would have won ‘most creative female’ while I won ‘most creative male’, and then we would both have won ‘most creative couple’…basically, we would have won everything! 0_o

WC: really?! J wonny3 easy kraa!…………now, to the “dress”. Am sure people want to know…what was your inspiration, or maybe, who?

Charles: oh, it’s a who, but not as you might suspect. Seeing as the theme was contemporary African, I thought I could go all out and do something crazy. The African part was kinda easy. It was making it contemporary that was the challenge. Have you seen Matrix 2? Remember the outfit Neo was wearing? I just decided to incorporate some African into that. It was cassock-ish but had that futuristic Matrix theme with the African in it. I was blown away myself when I saw it.

WC: we were all blown away by it. Trust me! lol…so, who made it for you?

Charles: it was my concept and I had it made in Accra. I sent a picture of it from the movie to my mum, who got her friend who is a good fashion designer to make it. It was a bit confusing to him at first, but after lots of phone calls, with my mum’s direction and the designer’s ingenuity and creativity, it turned out better than I expected. It was slightly big at the waist when it came so Lady Pearl in my class, with Erica’s black thread and her friend Nana Akoma’s needle helped make it juuuust right!

WC: seriously! lol…a dress that can’t win an award with all that work really has no hope at all…so what’s up with the prize? Can we share? J

Charles: we could, but too bad I’m sending it to my mum ‘cause she’d probably kill me if I didn’t…lol…she used her fabric for the dress so I’m replacing it and saying thanks.

WC: will we see you again next year with some wilder outfit?

Charles: most probably…I really enjoyed myself this year, so yeah…probably….with ‘Miss Date’ on my arm

WC: OK!...thank you so very much for the lovely time. Hopefully, I’ll be interviewing you again this time next year. It’s been great talking with you.
